Enhancing Watershed Management with Precision Data: Aero Velocity’s Partnership with NRCS

At Aero Velocity, we are committed to delivering high-resolution data that transforms how natural resources are managed. One of our most impactful projects to date is our collaboration with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) on watershed scanning. This initiative focuses on collecting LiDAR data to support sustainable water resource management.

The Importance of Watershed Data

Watersheds play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance and supplying water for agricultural, recreational, and community use. Understanding the intricacies of these systems helps resource managers make informed decisions about flood prevention, erosion control, and water quality. These dams help prevent sedimentation and siltation from spreading to lager water bodies and damaging ecosystems downstream.  However, monitoring watersheds can be complex without access to high-quality data.

Cutting-Edge Technology for Accurate Insights

Our team uses state-of-the-art drone technology equipped with LiDAR sensors to map watersheds with exceptional accuracy. This data provides detailed elevation models that are crucial for analyzing watershed conditions. The result? Actionable insights that help the NRCS and other agencies optimize watershed management strategies.

Supporting Communities and Conservation

Wear and erosion caused by natural occurrences like storms, as well as human activity, can impact the integrity of each dam. LiDAR data provides valuable insights that might not be apparent to the naked eye and helps NRCS crews to make more informed decisions on how they maintain the dams and watersheds.

"Seeing the destruction caused by a dam failure firsthand, especially after scanning some of these structures personally, is a truly surreal experience." Comments Seth Allen, Chief Pilot at Aero Velocity. Allen has flown the majority of water shed scans for Aero Velocity and has been a direct point of contact for the NRCS.

Through these advanced scanning efforts, Aero Velocity is helping to bridge the gap between traditional resource management and modern technology. By providing precise data, we empower agencies like the NRCS to assess risks, prioritize repairs, and develop long-term solutions to protect both the environment and surrounding communities.

In addition to providing technical data, our work aligns with broader conservation efforts. By identifying areas at risk of flooding or erosion, we help protect vulnerable communities and agricultural operations. Moreover, our focus on precision irrigation supports water conservation in regions where resources are limited.

Collaboration for Greater Impact

Our partnership with NRCS is about more than data collection. It’s about empowering stakeholders with the tools they need to make informed decisions. The collaboration is an excellent example of how modern technology can support traditional resource management practices, ensuring a sustainable future for all.
